Future Academic Prizes

Historically, we have jointly awarded a biennial Intergenerational Justice prize worth €10,000 with the Stuttgart-based Foundation for the Rights of Future Generations (FRFG). The prize is open to essay-writers who address issues pertaining to the field of intergenerational justice. The prize is initiated and funded by the Apfelbaum Foundation to which we give grateful thanks.

This year’s prize focuses on Existential Risk and Future Generations

Outline

How can we protect future generations from existential risks, which we define as all potential dangers that could destroy humanity or deprive it of its potential?

Existential risks can be natural: deadly, highly transmissible viruses and the pandemics that are triggered by them; the impact of an asteroid or comet; the eruption of several large volcanoes or a supervolcano; gamma-ray flashes or supernovae.

Man-made risks could include: a nuclear war, an out of control artificial intelligence (AI): the use of biological or chemical weapons; or a completely escalating climate change. And then there are unknown risks

Call for papers

In this Call for Papers we ask for contributions that consider and analyse the topic from different perspectives. Researchers from all fields are encouraged to enter, especially young researchers (students, graduates, post-docs). There is no age limit. Collaborative submissions are also welcome.Essays of 5,000 to 8,000 words, which address the subject in innovative ways, are welcomed.

Prize money

Prize money totalling €10,000 will be shared among the winning entries. The closing date is midnight 31 May 2022, 23:59 (GMT+1)

Publication

Excellent entries will be considered for publication in the Intergenerational Justice Review for the summer edition of 2022.
