Join our team!
We are seeking a new Researcher to provide part-time (2 to 3 days per week) contract work for the non-party-political charitable think tank, the Intergenerational Foundation.
Our office is in Herne Hill, London, which is easily accessible by train or bus. The new Researcher will join a small, friendly team that has been researching intergenerational unfairness for a decade in order to protect the interests of younger and future generations in government policymaking.

We are vehemently independent and non-party-political. We undertake research and publish our findings to the media, policy-makers, academia, business, and wider society on a wide range of issues that impact younger and future generations: housing, taxation, pensions, government debt, wealth distribution, health, mental health, higher education and environmental degradation. We are funded by no-strings donations from trusts, foundations, individuals and corporates whose missions align with our own.
The head-office team is surrounded by a wider active supporter group of around 80 members who meet monthly to discuss the charity’s activity and provide strategic advice and volunteering.
About the role
The Researcher will use readily available government data sources in agreed research areas in order to analyse changes in intergenerational unfairness over time. These could include: housing, pensions, taxation, health, mental health, and the environment. The Researcher will join an economic researcher and this Researcher role will strengthen the research capabilities of the team. The Researcher will be able to work independently.
The ideal candidate would have a good grasp of “R”, Excel, and other analytic tools within agreed research areas.
About you
Internal Responsibilities: The Researcher will deliver economically-focused research to include: research design, data collection, economic modelling and analysis, and output into newsworthy research reports.
Key dimensions of the post:
- Collate and keep up-to-date data on key themes relevant to the organisation’s area of work
- Contribute to, and regularly update, the organisational spreadsheet of research topics, status, actions and next steps in agreed areas
- Meet agreed research delivery dates and deadlines
- Provide regular organisational briefings on key research areas within parliamentary groups, government departments and academic organisations
- Identify new ideas and opportunities for new work, taking the lead on developing academic research proposals and contacts in agreed research areas
- Contribute to the organisation’s responses to government consultations
- Produce regular graphs/tables in “R” that can be used to tell visual stories and increase the profile of the organisation on social media platforms
- Manage internship students working on research projects
External Responsibilities:
The Researcher will have a public-facing proactive role in representing IF:
- Act as an advocate for the organisation
- Use influencing skills – to educate external audiences on the need for the organisation
- Seek speaker opportunities/panel attendance at academic, parliamentary, governmental, and think tank/NGO events
- Cite the organisation’s wider work/research reports whenever possible
- Seek opportunities to network at all external events
- Seek opportunities to raise the profile of the organisation
- Seek new research collaborations/academic funding opportunities for the organisation
- Have an interest in providing spokesmanship opportunities for the organisation
Your skills
Required:
- A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject. A postgraduate qualification and/or equivalent work experience would provide an advantage
- Strong analytical skills, including experience analysing large data sets in “R” and/or Excel. Experience with “R” would be a major advantage
- Experience with carrying out regression analysis
- Demonstrated ability to communicate research or complex ideas to varied audiences
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to research conceptualisation, design, analysis of data and/or report writing
- Ability to work under pressure within tight deadlines
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Experience with writing policy reports or research would be an advantage
- Interest in the Intergenerational Foundation’s values.
Desired:
- Experience communicating with key stakeholders such as MPs, charities and academics
Remuneration: A day rate will be paid depending on experience and availability. The applicant can change their working days during the week depending on other obligations and responsibilities.
